Kawasaki's DOHC engine revolutionized sports bike performance when it was introduced in the 1970s. The DOHC (double overhead camshaft) design places two camshafts in the cylinder head to precisely control the opening and closing of the valves. This provides power and efficiency at higher revolutions, improving power and response at high revolutions. The camshaft arrangement also improves engine cooling performance and reduces engine vibration. Characterized by a distinctive mechanical sound and stability at high revolutions, it significantly improved performance in racing and touring.
